Victor Zordan receives Innovative Teaching Award
The UCR Academy of Distinguished Teaching has selected Dr. Victor Zordan for this year's Innovative Teaching Award. Professor Zordan is being honored for the design and implementation of his innovative Engineering course, CS 134: Video Game Development and Design. In this course, students are divided into teams and actually design and construct their own video game.

Dr. Keogh Designated University Scholar
Eamonn Keogh, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, has been chosen as this year’s UCR University Scholar. The prestigious award comes with a $75K prize over three years in recognition of his influential research, which includes over 100 published research papers (at least 10 with over 100 citations each) and several best paper awards, making him one of the most cited researchers in the area of data mining and databases.Google Day at UC Riverside

Tao Jiang named ACM Fellow and Rajiv Gupta named IEEE Fellow
The Department congratulates Professor Tao Jiang, who was named an ACM Fellow for his contributions to computational biology and computational complexity, and Rajiv Gupta, who was elevated to IEEE Fellow for his contributions to computer architecture and optimizing compilers.
Petko Bakalov gets Second Place for Poster Presentation at ACM GIS 2007
Ph.D. student Petko Bakalov was runner up in the Poster Presentation Contest of the 15th ACM International Symposium on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM GIS 2007) for his poster “TS2-tree - an Efficient Similarity Based Organization for Trajectory Data”, co-authored with Eamonn Keogh and Vassilis J. Tsotras. GIS is the premier venue for geospatial research. Congratulations to Petko!
Dragomir Yankov Awarded Best Paper Award at IEEE ICDM 2007
Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Dragomir Yankov, whose paper, “Disk Aware Discord Discovery: Finding Unusual Time Series in Terabyte Sized Datasets” won the Best Paper Award at the IEEE 2007 International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM). Not only did Dragomir win the best paper award, but he is the only graduate student to have two first-author papers in the conference. Congratulations, Dragomir!

New Textbook by Vahid Being Widely Adopted
The new textbook, “Digital Design” by Prof. Frank Vahid of UCR's Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering has been widely adopted in its first year. Several top-ranked engineering schools, including Univ. of Michigan, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, Univ. of Arizona, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame, have adopted the book, along with many dozens of other schools worldwide. The book not only provides a modern introduction to digital computer circuits, but inspires students through the use of numerous examples demonstrating engineering as a social discipline with significant positive impact on human lives.
Wei Wu Gets Best Paper Award at IEEE ICCD 2007
Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Wei Wu whose paper, “Improving the Reliability of On-chip Data Cache under Process Variation” won the Best Paper Award at the 25th IEEE International Conference on Computer Design for the Processor and Architecture track. Congratulations to Wei and co-authors Professor Jun Yang, Professor Sheldon Tan, and Dr. Shih-Lien Lu from Intel.
New CSE Faculty
The Department is very excited to welcome Professor Rajiv Gupta in its faculty. Professor Gupta's area of research includes Compilers, Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, and Program Analysis.
Laxmi Bhuyan Appointed CSE Chair
Laxmi Bhuyan is appointed as Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department starting July 2007.
Over $5M in Grants for 2007
The year 2007 has brought a large number of new grants: 7 NSF grants, 3 DoD/ARL/AFOSR, and 5 industry grants and gifts. Most of these grants are starting in the summer of 2007 and will last for 3 years. The total estimated amount of these new grants exceeds $5M.
