Fall quarter instruction

Instruction for graduate students in Computer Science will be available only in an online format. Courses offered can be viewed in the UCR online Schedule of Classes. All listed courses are regular CS courses, they will be taught by CS faculty, and they can be used towards the degree requirement.

The CSE department will provide several options for incoming graduate students to join our program, despite the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These options are explained below.

Students present in the country in Fall quarter:

Registration opens in mid-August for incoming domestic students and international students currently in the country and those who are able to get a visa to enter the country. An email notification about course enrollment will be sent to students in early August.

Students unable to come to UCR in Fall quarter have two options:

  1. Register as a regular UCR student and take classes remotely. All fees and tuition apply to students who choose this option, except for Ph.D. students who have tuition costs covered by the fellowship.

  2. Defer to start the program in Winter 2021 quarter. The deadline to request deferral changed to August 13. All requests need to be submitted by completing the Deferment Request Form.

Students wishing to defer to Spring or Fall 2021 quarters must submit the request to defer to the Winter 2021 quarter at this time. In the beginning of the fall quarter, the department will re-evaluate the situation regarding the pandemic and will provide information about extending the deferral to future quarters. Students who fail to submit the deferral request to Winter 2021 cannot be guaranteed a space in our program for the next academic year.

Students deferring to Winter 2021 will have an option to enroll in some courses in Fall 2020 via the UC Extension program. This is a special program that makes UCR courses available to non-UCR students. Students who join our program later will be allowed to use up to 8 units from UC Extension towards their degree requirements. The information about the cost and registration process for UC Extension will be provided at a later date.

PhD students who requested deferrals will have their fellowship postponed to the quarter they arrive at UCR, and the amount of the award will not change.

In early July there will be an online information session via Zoom. During this meeting, additional information will be provided, and staff and faculty will be available to answer questions. All admitted students are strongly encouraged to attend this session.
