PhD Student Yu-Ching Hu, working with Prof. Hung-Wei Tseng (cooperating faculty member of CSE), received the Best Paper Honorable Mention Award in the 52nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Microarchitecture. In their paper entitled "Dynamic Multi-Resolution Data Storage", they designed an intelligent storage device that dynamically adjusts the dataset resolution, thereby mitigating the performance bottleneck of exchanging/preparing data for approximate compute kernels. Their paper opens a new avenue of approximate computing and provides an immediate solution to improve performance for systems with SSDs and approximate accelerators (e.g., TPUs and GPUs).
