The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in the following programs - Computer Science (CS), Computer Science with Business Applications (CSBA), and Computer Engineering (CEN), as well as minors in Computer Science. All three majors prepare students for industry and government careers as well as for graduate school.

As a student in the Bourns College of Engineering, you will have the opportunity of studying under and working directly with leaders in your field. In addition to the social resources available to you and access to state-of-the-art labs, you will have exciting opportunities to work on unique and challenging projects.

If you're feeling particularly creative, find a faculty advisor and propose your own project (CS 179). All three majors offer an exciting variety of electives to fit your interests and academic focus.

  • The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (CS) program stresses the study of foundational and advanced CS topics. This technical major prepares students for a large variety of computing careers, including software engineering, networks, databases, graphics, algorithms, security, system analysis, embedded systems, and much more.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with Business Applications (CSBA) program covers the core of Computer Science along with basic business and management topics. The CSBA major prepares students for careers in management of computer and information systems, system administration, and e-commerce. This major is a perfect fit for individuals looking for a technical degree with a business edge, such as for entrepreneurs considering starting a high-tech company.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (CEN) program stresses the problems involved in building and optimizing computing systems, from very small scales to very large scales. The CEN major prepares students for careers involving the design of complex systems using computer hardware and software, electronics, networking and communication. Systems designed include those for communication, networking, computer vision, desktop computing, and embedded computing. The Computer Engineering major is offered jointly by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Research Facilities

The department has recently relocated to a new facility within the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. Our fiber networked facilities host both teaching and research laboratories supported by the Department’s Systems Operations Group. The Systems Operations Group supports student and faculty research missions with critical knowledge and materials support. The Department maintains Microsoft Windows, Linux, Unix, and virtualized systems and services. Low latency and high bandwidth availability through redundant connections to internet core backbones provide our students and faculty with uninterrupted access to leading technology.

Financial Support

Support is available for graduate students through fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. Please refer to the Graduate Division website for yearly admission deadlines.
