We are entering into the 5G era. With advanced radio access technologies
and more frequency spectrum resources, 5G expects to greatly enhance
mobile broadband experience (say, 5G should be much faster). However, not
all 5Gbenefits come without cost and pains. In this talk, I would like to
introduce our recent studies to unveil unanticipated problems with 5G radio
resource control. Compared to 3G/4G, 5G allows more than one cells to
serve the mobile device. When the number of serving cells increases from 1
to N, we find that the current practice fails to keep up with the expanding
radio resource and power. As a result, 5G is well deployed but not fully
utilized as it can and should. I would like to show that (1) RRC
configurations may go wrong so that 5G potentials are wasted. (2) the legacy
measurement fails to support many cells quickly and thus we propose a new
design to accelerate the selection of many cells. Both studies will appear at
CoNext’23 and MobiCom’23 soon. Finally, I will present our ongoing and
future work to make 5G truly faster and better.
