Abstract: AI holds the promise of alleviating the negative impact of chronic disease, and mental health by scaling human effort over time and space. Four in ten adults in the US have two or more chronic illnesses, and one in five experiences a mental illness. The urgent need to manage these conditions calls for robust and reliable technology that can be readily integrated into care-ecologies. In this talk, I will demonstrate how human-centered computing can leverage the generalizability of theoretical frameworks to build systems for diabetes and PTSD care. I will discuss their unique challenges: for patients with diabetes, these include poor patient engagement and lack of continuity of care; PTSD therapy is limited by over-reliance on patient self-reports and clinician intuition. I will present theory-driven interventions that address these issues. I will describe how ecological AI systems can transform patient care and discuss how they can lead to improved health and wellness in diverse populations.
Bio: Dr. Arriaga’s primary research area is Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Her emphasis is on using psychosocial theories and methods to address fundamental HCI topics. She designs technology for mental health and chronic care management to increase patient engagement, support continuity of care, enhance clinical decision making and mediate patient-provider communication.
