Graduate Program Handbook: Registering for Courses

Registering for Courses

The R’Web portal allows students to manage accounting and coursework online. Students are given a registration appointment date to add/drop courses within R’Web when all holds have been cleared. Full-time graduate students are expected to register in at least 12 units per quarter and are limited to 3 classes or up to 15 units per quarter unless additional units are approved on an exceptional basis. The course offerings for the academic year are listed at https://www1.cs.ucr.edu/graduate/course-listings.

Graduate students may not have required UCR prerequisites for some courses. In order to enroll, they need to contact the instructor teaching the course via email, request permission to enroll, and upload this permission to the Graduate Course Enrollment Form.

All new PhD students are advised to consult with their faculty advisors and/or the Graduate Program Coordinator for course recommendations prior to registration. Special permission must be given from the faculty advisor to enroll in non-CS courses. If permission is granted, students submit the Substitute Course Work available in RGrad. Only approved undergraduate technical electives will be counted towards the graduate studies. A complete list of the approved undergraduate technical electives is available at https://www1.cs.ucr.edu/graduate/technical-electives/.

A student wishing to adjust registration/enrollment during week 3, submits the Enrollment Adjustment Form available in R’Grad. For any enrollment adjustment done after week 3, a $4 fee is charged, and a “W” will appear on the transcript for dropped courses. Additional information on Enrollment Adjustment is available at https://graduate.ucr.edu/regulations-and-procedures#enrollment_adjustment.

New graduate students admitted with course deficiency are informed via email before the registration period for new students opens in mid-August. If the applicants submit their transcript before taking the equivalent course during their last term in their bachelor’s or master’s degree, the Graduate Advisor may waive the prerequisite. The waiver can be reviewed once the student submits a copy of the transcript listing the equivalent course.

NOTE: Admission prerequisite/deficiency courses CS 061, CS 141, and CS 153 may not be taken for graduate credit.
